Speakybara is a free app for Windows and Mac that turns any part of your screen into text you can copy or listen to: press a hotkey, drag a frame, done.
ElevenReader, the ElevenLabs Reader, is a consumer listening app for iOS, Android and the web with some of the most natural-sounding voices available, word-level highlighting and a library you import into: ePub, PDF, links, pasted text or a camera scan.
On voice quality this is not a close call: ElevenReader wins. On reaching the text in front of you on a Windows or Mac screen, it cannot compete, because there is no desktop app.

ElevenReader Ultra is USD 11 a month or USD 99 a year billed annually, as published on October 2, 2026; the free tier is 10 hours of audio a month, and verified students and educators get a year of Ultra free. Speakybara is free and Complete is €59 a year incl. VAT. ElevenLabs does not publish a verifiable euro price for the Reader.
Privacy
ElevenLabs stores data in the United States, the Netherlands and Singapore, and its policy allows it to process your personal data to train its models unless you opt out in settings. Speakybara has no account and no server-side library: the image is recognised on your computer and discarded, and when it reads aloud only the sentence being spoken reaches Microsoft or Google — nothing at all with the local Piper voices.
Switching
The two barely overlap. ElevenReader is a phone and a library; Speakybara is the screen in front of you. Plenty of people will sensibly use both.

ElevenReader, honestly. Speakybara's offline Piper voices sound synthetic next to it; its best voices are Microsoft Edge neural, free on Windows, and Google Chirp 3 HD with your own key or Complete.
