Speakybara vs TextSniper
Checked October 2, 2026
Speakybara is a free app for Windows and Mac that turns any part of your screen into text you can copy or listen to: press a hotkey, drag a frame, done.
TextSniper is a macOS-only utility that copies text from anything on screen: press Cmd+Shift+2, drag a region, and the recognised text lands on your clipboard; it also reads QR codes and can speak the captured text with the macOS system voices.
TextSniper is the tool Mac users point to when they want text out of a picture. Speakybara does the same on the Mac — as a test version, on a Mac with Apple silicon — and on Windows, with listening built in rather than bolted on.

Pick TextSniper if
- You want a finished Mac app from the App Store: Speakybara for Mac is still an unsigned test version, only for Apple silicon and macOS 14 or newer.
- You mainly want the text on your clipboard.
- You prefer a one-time purchase over anything recurring.
- You scan QR codes from the screen as well.
- Your text is English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese or Chinese.
Pick Speakybara if
- You work on Windows as well as on a Mac: Speakybara runs on both.
- You want a read-along window, not a bonus speak command.
- You read Dutch: TextSniper does not list it among its languages.
- You want the voice to follow the language per sentence, automatically.
- You want the same tool to copy and to read aloud.

Price
TextSniper is a one-time purchase on the Mac App Store: USD 7.99 for one Mac, USD 9.99 for three and USD 11.99 unlimited, with a 7-day money-back window; it is also part of Setapp. Major updates may cost extra. Speakybara is free, and Complete is €59 a year incl. VAT only if you want Google's voices without the setup.
Privacy
Both recognise text on the device — on a Mac both use Apple's own text recognition, on Windows Speakybara uses the one built into Windows — and by default neither uploads the image. TextSniper speaks with the local macOS voices, so nothing leaves the Mac. Speakybara can do the same with the macOS voices or Piper, and only sends text away if you choose an online voice, such as Google's, or an online AI.
Switching
On the same Mac the two can sit side by side: TextSniper on Cmd+Shift+2, Speakybara on Control+Option+E to copy and Control+Option+S to listen. On Windows the closest free text-only equivalents are PowerToys Text Extractor (Win+Shift+T) and Text Grab: recognition to the clipboard, no speech. Capture2Text adds basic SAPI speech but was last released in March 2022.
